Mental illness affects more than one million people in Colorado and one in five people in the United States each year, but nearly 60 percent of adults with a mental illness report not receiving mental health services in the previous year. Colorado also has one of the highest suicide rates in the country, with even higher rates found in the central mountain counties.

This program brings together three experts who are working on the front lines to tackle this issue in Colorado. They will discuss strengths and weakness of the current mental health care system, trends in treatment – including telepsychiatry – the role of a primary medical care physician in mental health care and issues in rural and underserved communities.

MEET THE PANELISTS

Dr. Marshall Thomas, M.D. is the founding executive director of the University of Colorado Helen and Arthur E. Johnson Depression Center. The comprehensive center provides outpatient clinical services, conducts a wide array of research on the treatment and prevention of mood disorders and delivers numerous community programs designed to provide mental health education and reduce the stigma around mental health. The Johnson Depression Center is part of the National Network of Depression Centers and is the only comprehensive center of its kind in the Rocky Mountain West. Thomas will serve as moderator for this discussion. 

Dr. Frank deGruy III, M.D., M.S.F.M. is the Woodward-Chisholm professor and chair of the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, a position he has held since 1999. deGruy received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University in 1970 (sociology, religion) and his medical degree in 1977 from the College of Medicine at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, Alabama. He completed a family medicine residency at The Medical Center in Columbus, Georgia in 1980 and completed a Robert Wood Johnson Fellow in Family Medicine at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio in 1982. He has held academic appointments in Departments of Family Medicine at Case Western Reserve University, Duke University and the University of South Alabama.

Dr. Jay Shore, M.D., M.P.H. is the director of telemedicine at the University of Colorado Helen and Arthur E. Johnson Depression Center. He is also an Associate Professor at the University of Colorado’s Department of Psychiatry and the School of Public Health’s Centers for American Indian and Alaska Native Health. Additionally, he is the rural Native Veteran Domain Lead for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ Veterans Rural Health Resource Center – Western Region (VRHRC-WR) and is an Associate Medical Director at the Colorado Physician Health Program (CPHP).
