Beyond the Board Game to Supermarkets & Search Engines: Monopolies and Antitrust
What are the limits of how much of the market a business should be allowed to control, and how do today’s modern market economies control the development of monopolies through mergers? What are the public enforcement vs. the defense arguments in diverse cases such as the Kroger-Albertsons merger and the Google Search case? What are the potential harms to customers as well as to the open market? Why do these cases matter and what impacts do they have on our daily lives?
Join Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser and top antitrust attorneys Logan Breed and John Thorne as Janet McDavid moderates a discussion about modern monopoly and antitrust cases.
The panelists will talk about the Kroger-Albertsons merger and why the State of Colorado is putting resources to attempt to block it. They will also walk us through the US vs. Google antitrust case and how laws that were first developed in the 1890s are now assessing digital competitiveness and the potential consequences for future tech markets. The speakers will also discuss how the election of Donald Trump and new leadership at the federal antitrust agencies might affect antitrust enforcement.
