“Battlegrounds”: An Evening with Lt. General (ret.) H.R. McMaster

Lt. General H.R. McMaster argues in his recently released book, “Battlegrounds: The Fight to Defend the Free World,” that across multiple administrations since the end of the Cold War, American foreign policy has been misconceived, inconsistent and poorly implemented. As a result, America and the free world have fallen behind authoritarian rivals such as China in power and influence. Meanwhile, threats to security, freedom and prosperity, including nuclear proliferation and jihadist terrorism, have grown.

Lt. General McMaster will address competition with rival and hostile states. He will also examine new arenas of competition—in space, cyberspace and those associated with emerging technologies, where the United States’ approaches to those challenges have resulted in missed opportunities. Lt. General McMaster shares ideas for a pathway forward to improve strategic competence and prevail in complex competitions with authoritarian powers, transnational terrorist organizations and hostile states that, McMaster argues, are determined to undermine America and other free and open societies.

Importantly, Lt. General McMaster hopes to amplify the call for Americans and citizens of the free world to transcend the vitriol of partisan political discourse, to better educate themselves about the most significant challenges to national and international security, and to work together to secure peace and prosperity for future generations.

General McMaster will join in conversation with Jaime Metzl.
