Illuminating the Abyss: Unlocking Ocean Intelligence in an Age of Disruption
There is no video for this event.
The ocean is Earth’s most complex and powerful machine—a massive engine that powers planetary systems on which we all depend. It feeds billions, underpins our economy, and regulates the temperature and weather we experience every day.
It is also our most consequential blind spot. From national security to economic resilience and climate stability, our future depends on how well we understand the ocean. Yet our knowledge of the inner workings of this Ocean Machine is astonishingly shallow in policymaking, industry, and even science. New tools and technologies have brought us to a new knowledge frontier, opening the door to real-time, actionable ocean intelligence to protect and preserve this ocean planet. But will we lean into the ocean breakthroughs needed to meet the moment, or will we stand back and miss this window to use ocean intelligence for the benefit of all?
Join Dr. Peter de Menocal, President and Director of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution—the world’s leading ocean science nonprofit—for a revealing look at the ocean, why it matters, and why we must make overcoming ocean ignorance a national imperative in this time of disruption.
