More than once Caroline Van Hemert remarked that the philosophy behind a human-powered journey across Alaska with her husband Pat was to see and experience the land the way animals do. Her beautiful story was replete with accounts of encounters and sightings of various animals and birds. She shared the perilous confrontation with a predatory black bear as well as the majestic experience of watching a caribou herd cross a river. In fact, it was in the final stretch of their journey towards the western coast that Caroline and Pat put their trust in the wisdom of the caribou and their ability to navigate the Alaskan territory.
