Courtney Dauwaulter and Josiah Middaugh dished to Vail Symposium
On a planet with more than 7.5 billion people, it is incredible to be in the presence of two of the best in the world. Courtney Dauwalter and Josiah Middaugh are two of the best at what they do: ultrarunning and off-road triathlons, respectively.
Throughout the evening of conversation with Courtney, Josiah and moderator Steve Leigh, the Vail Symposium audience was astounded at the athletic feats the two athletes described, and equally amazed at the nonchalance with which they described them. As Steve wryly observed, running a marathon is for some people a bucket-list item, for Courtney it is a light workout.
One of the big takeaways of the evening was that the mental component of elite sports is equally as important as the physical. Josiah credits his lack of early success for motivating him to continue. He also acknowledged that he was not afraid to fail and that was a major component to his resilience.
All three people on stage were impressive certainly for their talents, but also for their modesty.
