Exploring Afro-Cuban Jazz

Arts & Culture

with Dr. Michael Davison

and featuring a special performance by ¡Cubanismo!

August 9, 2017

Ludwig’s Terrace at the Sonnenalp | Vail

Spanning the 1700s to the modern era, the evolution of Afro-Cuban music has defined an isolated culture and influenced a global landscape. Dr. Michael Davison, D.M.A., a celebrated educator and performer, will contextualize this musical tradition through an era-by-era analysis of Danzon, Son, Cha Cha Cha, Mambo and Salsa. Davison will be joined by internationally acclaimed Cuban ensemble ¡Cubanismo!, who will demonstrate the driving rhythms and diverse array of percussion instruments that bring each sub-genre to life.
Davison is a legendary performer, respected professor, published composer and ethnomusicologist. His love of music has shaped his life and career. He is in demand across the country as a classical and jazz performer and educator. As a performer, he has given jazz and classical recitals all over the United States as well as in parts of France, the Netherlands, Spain, South Africa, China and Cuba. Davison has recorded four jazz CDs as both a leader and sideman.
