Dr. Bruce Jones, author of the recent, bestselling book “To Rule the Waves: How Control of the World’s Oceans Shapes the Fate of the Superpowers” will talk about the mounting naval arms race between the US and China and how misunderstanding or missteps could lead to armed conflict. Melting Arctic ice, China’s man-made islands in the South China Sea, as well as China’s naval expansion, only intensify the ongoing military competition between the U.S. and China playing out on the world stage.

He will also address broader implications of US-China rivalry and mounting global tensions. Beyond the Pacific theater, the U.S. and China are increasingly engaged in soft-power competition elsewhere in the world.

Finally, Jones will consider the interplay between those tensions and contemporary globalization against the backdrop of interruptions in global supply chains, which gained widespread attention during the pandemic and seem likely to persist for the foreseeable future. He will examine the economics and strategic implications for the United States as it struggles to adapt to changing geopolitical, geoeconomics and climate realities.
