Are increasing polarization, declining rule of law, and the rise of populism trends signaling the decline and decay of democracy around the globe? Join Hoover Institute senior fellow Larry Diamond as he explores these and other key trends that are indicative of democracy in crisis. Diamond will trace the expansion of democracy, which began in the 1970s, and greatly accelerated following the end of the Cold War. Initially in retreat, Diamond addresses the dismaying resurgence of authoritarianism. What constitutes high-quality democracy, the tools in the authoritarians’ toolkit and the causes of democratic breakdown will all be discussed in this expansive examination of global liberal democracy.
