Connecting the worlds of art and neuroscience

The Vail Symposium connected the worlds of art and neuroscience at their Art, A Matter of Mind event on August 15 at Colorado Mountain College.
This program was a collaboration that brought together a collector, JoAnn Gonzales Hickey; a curator, Mardee Goff; and a neuroscience researcher from CU Boulder, Flux.
The Vail Symposium program launched the installation which elevated this collaboration from art appreciation to art and science education. A portion of Ms. Hickey’s collection will remain on display at CMC through October 26, 2018.
One of the key takeaways the audience gleaned from this presentation is that contemporary art provides both an opportunity and a requirement that the observer develop their own interpretation of the art they are viewing. It is an active, rather than passive, interaction. Thanks to Flux, the audience was able to see just which parts of the brain are activated when engaged in art interpretation.
