Pulitzer-prize winning journalist Eric Lichtblau addressed a capacity crowd at The Sebastian Vail on Sunday, Dec. 29. Many stories of heroism from WWII have been lost to history–Lichtblau was able to bring to life the heroic story of Freddy Mayer.
Mayer was a holocaust refugee who became an undercover OSS agent behind enemy lines in Nazi-occupied Austria. Lichtblau was able to create a lasting memory of Mayer with the audience by sharing anecdotes such as Freddy wearing his father’s WWI military belt as a child, adding a box of prophylactics to the list of supplies for his undercover mission and getting himself admitted to a German military hospital where he gathered invaluable intelligence.
Even though the odds were stacked against Freddy and his small team, they not only survived but were also highly successful in aiding the war effort.
