In the wake of the recent tragic shootings in Aurora and Connecticut, this discussion will examine the mind of the mass murderer, and attempt to shed light on the why behind such devastating events so we can better understand how to prevent them in the future. Authors Jeff Kass and Jeff Mariotte and Dr. Patrick Fox will speak on a panel moderated by Rohn Robbins.
Patrick Fox, M.D. is currently the Attending Psychiatrist at the Denver Detention Center, the primary facility for inmates of the city and county of Denver. He has 14 years of experience and practices in psychiatry and forensic psychiatry and is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
Jeff Kass was one of the first reporters on the scene of the tragic 1999 Columbine shooting in Littleton, Colorado. Ten years later his book, Columbine: A True Crime Story, a victim, the killers and the nation’s search for answers, became the first book of investigative journalism to tell the complete story of that day, the far-reaching consequences and the common denominators among school shooters across the country. As a reporter at the Rocky Mountain News for 10 years he covered some of the state's biggest stories and wrote from Cambodia on a Vietnam War MIA, from Cuba on Colorado businesses doing work there, from Texas on the space shuttle Columbia explosion, and from Virginia Tech on the 2007 shootings. Jeff Mariotte is the author of Criminal Minds: Sociopaths, Serial Killers, and Other Deviants, a fascinating and terrifying book about the criminal minds who live among us. An authorized companion to CBS’ Criminal Minds series, Jeff’s book takes a deeper look into the Behavior Analysis Unit’s process by revealing the evil behind some of the most heinous murderers, sexual predators and psychopaths in history. Jeff has written more than forty-five novels and won multiple awards for his work. For more information about Jeff and his work visit www.jeffmariotte.com.
